Something irritating happened last week.
Total strangers asked for access to my audience.
People said things to me like:
“I’m launching a new coaching service. Can you introduce me to people who need help?”
“I just wrote an article. Can you send it to your email list for me?”
“I’m trying to get some new followers. Can you give me a Follow Friday shoutout?”
Because here’s the thing:
When I share things with my audience I’m effectively saying to everyone who was kind enough to join my audience…everyone who trusts me and my opinion, “Hey, look at this thing that I think is worth sharing with you.”
It is because of that trust I ONLY share things with my audience that are of good quality. I ONLY share things that I think will be interesting, entertaining, thought-provoking, or educational.
If I don’t know you, I have no way of knowing if your content is actually any good. I have no way of knowing if you’re a decent human. I have no idea if you do scammy business practices, or if you spam your list.
If you want me to share with my audience, put out high-quality content, and build a relationship with me first. Get to know me. Let me get to know you.
Why don’t we see if we’re a good fit before we go asking for favours from each other?
