I’m a lot of things.
I’m a web designer.
I’m an agency owner.
I’m a business operations consultant.
I’m a wife.
I’m a yogi.
I’m a dislocated New Mexican.
But above all…
I’m a woman on a mission to help entrepreneurs make bank and escape the hustle. It even says so right on my homepage (lol), which is the inspiration for this post.
I’ve gotten a lot of emails since I began using this tagline.
My favourite is
“Why should I escape the hustle?”
And you know what? I’ve got a really good answer for you.
Why you should escape the hustle
When you’re running a business and doing all. the. things. it feels like you have only one speed:
Hustle Mode in Overdrive.
If you’re awake, you’re working.
And balance is nowhere to be seen.
The last time you felt balance was so long ago it’s no longer in your rear-view mirror.
If you’ve been living in that mode, it’s not your fault.
We have been brainwashed by all these gurus who say you have to get up at the crack of doom and hustle 12-16hrs a day if you want to succeed.
We look at them, we see what they have, and we want it.
We want the recognition.
We want the money.
We want the freedom.
So we take their “get up at 4am” and “hustle harder” advice like it’s etched in stone.
As a result of all this bullshit, we feel like if we *don’t* hustle constantly we’re doomed to a life of mediocrity.
We feel like an imposter.
Like we don’t measure up.
But this “advice” of hustle 12-16hrs a day is quite frankly a crock of shit.
It has been proven time and time again to yield poor results.
Welsh labour activist Robert Owen saw this in 1817 back when the traditional work day was 12-16hrs. 200 years ago he was pushing for a new dynamic of shorter work days and more breaks.
Nearly 100 years ago, the Ford Motor Company cut down to an 8hr day, 48hr work week, and then reduced it even further to a 40hr work week.
When they cut down from the 12-16hr work day, they saw an INCREASE in labour efficiency and employee happiness.
And yet! Here we are in 2019 and gurus are trying to convince entrepreneurs to work the same 12-16hr days that have been proven to be ineffective and inefficient.
And we’re letting them! We’re enabling this narrative.
All of us poor entrepreneurs have been drinking the fucking Kool-Aid because some douche bro marketing guru has a jetset lifestyle and a fancy car.
We are screwing ourselves over! We are robbing ourselves of what’s truly important.
Time is the one resource we can’t get back.
All those things we don’t do for the sake of the hustle are gone.
Moments with the kids? Night out with friends? Taking a picnic with your partner?
Gone. Can’t get those back.
And those are the moments that — when our time comes — we’ll cherish above all else.
Entrepreneurs: it’s time we stop screwing ourselves over.
It’s time we stop worshiping at the alter of hustle.
And it’s time to stop being manipulated by these douche bro marketing gurus who are so vapid and empty that hustling for money and fame is the only way they get any sense of fulfillment.
It’s time to turn hustle mode off.
It’s time for a new way of doing business.
It’s time to change the narrative.
